Zirconia Flap Disk Comparison – Benchmark Abrasives vs CGW

Wondering how Benchmark’s Zirconia Flap Disks stack up against the competition? Of course we’d like to say that we blow everyone and their mom out of the water. But here’s a more realistic mano-a-mano of Benchmark VS Camel Grinding Wheel brand sent in from one of our customers. Yes, we actually do read the emails you send in.

Jack S. from Bakersfield, CA wrote, “I bought two 4.5” 60 grit flap discs to test; one from Camel Grinding Wheel brand (CGW) purchased from my local Industrial Metal Supply for $5.29 and one from Benchmark Abrasives online store for $1.65 (the pack of ten I bought was $16.50). I was a little bit worried about the Benchmark price being so low but figured for a savings that big I might as well give them a try.”

“Both flap discs look to be about the same size, however the Benchmark flap disc had 5 more flaps of abrasive material.”

“I welded 2 pieces of angle iron together and ran both of the discs for 30 minutes each on a frame that I’m building. I noticed right away that the CGW wheel was a harder wheel and required a little more force to hold in place while grinding. It did provide a more aggressive grind compared to the Benchmark flap disc but nothing to write home about.”

“After 30 minutes both wheels had taken off a decent amount of metal. The CGW disc definitely out performed the Benchmark disc as far as life is concerned but they were about the same on the performance side.”

“In my opinion, the Benchmark disc is the winner due to price. It was about 1/3 the price of the CGW disc and performed about the same. I go through quite a few of these discs every month and the savings buying from Benchmark makes it a no brainer for me.
The only down side is the CGW disc is US made and the Benchmark is Chinese.”

Thanks for the honest review Jack. As for the rest of you – do you have something to say about our products? We’d like to hear about it! Submit your review here.

High Density Flap Discs

We now have high density flap discs in stock! With 40% additional abrasive flaps you can expect a 30-40% longer life, offering you more stock removal for your money. You can grind longer by not switching wheels as often and still have the removal produced by a grinding wheel and the finish of a resin fiver disc.. The high density wheel is a t29 flap disc which has a 15-20% angle for optimal performance allowing for the most stock removal.  Made from European Zirconia, the T29 high density flap disc is top of the line quality for an amazing price, factory direct! We currently offer the high density in 40,60 and 80 grit to meet your needs. Our customers are have been beyond pleased with the high density wheel and we know you will be too!

Abrasive Wheel Cutting Theory

An abrasive is a material used to shape a work piece by either cutting or abrading. Typically a bonded abrasive is used for cutting/grinding and a coated abrasive is for shaping/polishing. An abrasive can be made up of many different types of elements and held together by different types of bonds. Each type of wheel is made for a specific use through a highly critical process with different material. There are thousands of grains, tiny little tool bits that are held together by a bond. Depending on what the job is there are several components to decide what abrasive to use. For light pressure applications you may want a soft grade wheel which is designed to break down quickly and remain sharp.  It is combined with a low temperature bond and a flexible backing like paper for a smoother or finer finish. Soft grade wheels remain sharp, the grain continually transforms avoiding too much heat and becoming dull; this allows a smooth finish.  A coarse grain does more work and therefore contributes to greater hardness. If you are less worried about the finish and care to remove stock or weld in a fast manner then you want a coarse grain for the rougher operations.

Precision Oiler

The solution to dispensing controlled amounts of lubrication – The Precision Oiler

Have you ever had to oil a hard to reach application, maybe a high door hinge or an oil tube on the inside of an audio system? The precision oiler, or  “mini” oiler is the perfect solution for tight, hard to reach places or machines.  Whether you are on the job, on the road or at home, the precision oiler has multiple uses.  You control the amount of your favorite lubricant that comes out of a 1.5” long micro nozzle by softly or firmly pressing on the pen like actuator. Being practically the same size as an average pen it’s convenient and easy to handle with no mess!  Most comes with a protective screw on cover and has a pen like clip. Phillip from Colorado Springs, CO recently fixed his computer fan  by using the precision oiler.
